How does an IPL Photofacial work?

Unwanted melanin deposits are effectively absorbed by pulsed light technology, which works to break down the skin’s pigment in the targeted area while ensuring that the surrounding tissue remains unharmed and intact. Additionally, when applied at a different setting, this versatile treatment can successfully address damaged blood vessels that are situated deeper beneath the skin. This includes various vascular lesions, commonly referred to as spider veins, which will coagulate and gradually shrink over time.

During the weeks that follow your treatment session, your body’s natural “clean-up” system will work diligently to eliminate those shattered melanin particles. As a result, you can expect little to no trace of the spots or redness that were once present on your skin. Furthermore, the IPL photofacial treatment also enhances overall skin texture by stimulating collagen production, leading to tighter and firmer skin that will provide lasting improvements for years to come.

How much does an IPL Photofacial Cost?

The cost for an IPL Photofacial is $200 per treatment or $500 for a series of three treatments.

If you are new to establishing a comprehensive skin care routine, we suggest starting with three treatments to achieve the best possible results. These initial sessions can help set a solid foundation for your skin's health and appearance. On the other hand, if you are focusing on maintaining your skin's quality, we recommend trying 2-3 treatments spread out over the course of a year to ensure ongoing support.

What to expect

Consultation

Your path to smoother skin begins with a consultation at Maui MedSpa. During this visit, we’ll discuss your goals, assess your skin and determine if an IPL Photofacial is the best option for you. We’ll also outline a personalized treatment plan, including the number of sessions needed for optimal results.

Procedure

At our office, your IPL photofacial treatment should not take more than 30-45 minutes. It’s a quick in-office procedure with minimum discomfort.

The IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is applied to the areas of your skin in need of treatment. You may experience a warm sensation like a rubber band snap as the light is applied to your skin, but the treatment is very gentle.

Post-Procedure and Recovery

Post-procedure: Your skin may appear red for up to 24 hours. Some people might also notice slight swelling depending on their skin sensitivity.

Recovery: Recovery usually takes two to five days based on skin sensitivity and the treatment. You should see significant improvements in skin discoloration and texture within a week. Freckles and dark spots may darken and dry out for four to seven days before flaking off naturally. If you had a vascular lesion treated, bruising might occur, particularly in areas other than the face.

Follow-up sessions and maintenance

For certain skin issues, you may need several sessions to achieve the best results. Generally, more severe blemishes require more treatments. IPL can help with current skin problems but won't stop new ones from appearing. For example, if you treat sun-damaged skin, you'll still need to protect yourself from future sun damage. Your results will last longer if you care for your skin by using antioxidants and sunscreen, and by limiting sun exposure.

 IPL Photofacial FAQs

  • For the best results, you need 1-3 sessions. The number of sessions depends on your skin damage and type. More sessions lead to better results.

  • You can treat the face, neck, chest and hands individually. Many people choose to receive for all three areas for seamless blending.

  • During the treatment, you will see a bright flash of light and feel a sensation like a light snap from a rubber band. Most patients find the treatment tolerable and not very painful.

  • To prepare for your treatment, avoid skin irritation for one month before. This includes direct sun exposure, sunbathing, and tanning. Additionally:

    • Stop using irritating products like retinol and tretinoin one week prior.

    • Stop taking photosensitizing medications (like some antibiotics).

    • Stop using Accutane for six months.

    • Avoid self-tanners on your face for one week and on your body for two weeks.

    • Arrive at your appointment with clean skin—no makeup, lotions, perfume, jewelry, or other products on the treated area.

  • Since an IPL is a pulsed light therapy, it does not injure or puncture the skin and there is no downtime following the treatment. Immediately after your procedure, you may apply makeup, moisturizer, or a broad-spectrum SPF if needed

  • After your treatment, you may notice redness and slight warmth on your skin, which typically goes away in a few hours. In the following week, dark spots might get darker, some spots may peel, and blood vessels may change color. This is normal and leads to a smoother skin tone. You can see some results right after your first treatment. Improvements in skin tone and sun damage may appear in a few days, while your skin will look healthier after 1-2 weeks. For vascular treatments, results can be seen within 2 weeks.
